Why Ashland, Oregon Should Be Your Next Travel Spot

If you’ve never heard of Ashland, Oregon, let me be the first to tell you—it’s a hidden gem. Nestled in Southern Oregon, this small town is a dreamy destination for those seeking slow travel, beautiful scenery, and an impressive food scene. You might know it for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival known as OSF in the area, but trust me, there’s more to Southern Oregon Gem than theater. From its friendly locals (both human and animal—deer regularly cross the road here) to its flourishing foodie culture, Ashland offers something for everyone.

When you’re tired of the fast pace of city life and looking for a place to slow down, Ashland’s relaxed vibe will welcome you with open arms. And yes, you’ll literally have to slow down—deer have the right of way here!

The Best Time to Visit Ashland

I can’t stress this enough—fall is hands down the best time to visit this charming town. The air cools down, the trees show off their vibrant colors, and the summer smoke (yes, that’s a thing in Southern Oregon) clears out. Plus, the hiking trails in and around Ashland are at their best, and if you’re into skiing, Mt. Ashland is just a stone’s throw away.

If you’re planning a trip in the fall, don’t miss the chance to experience Ashland’s Farmer’s Market at ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum. It’s the perfect spot for local produce, food trucks, and a cup of coffee. And speaking of coffee…

  1. The Coffee Culture: Fueling Ashland’s Soul

You can’t talk about Ashland without mentioning the coffee. Ashlanders love their brew, and coffee shops are practically on every corner. My personal favorite is Rogue Valley Roasting Company, where I stop for a morning latte to kickstart my day. You’ll spot hipsters and locals alike with coffee in hand, basking in the warm, cozy vibes this town exudes.

If you’re snapping a shot of your cup of Joe for the ‘gram, why not pair it with the stunning backdrop of Lithia Park in the fall? The golden leaves and misty mornings make for an Instagram-worthy moment! Trust me, nothing says Ashland quite like a warm cappuccino and the rich colors of autumn.

For a deeper dive into the coffee culture, check out my blog post [here](link to “Brewing Up Ashland: A Coffee Lover’s Journey Through Rainy Days and Cozy Cafés”).

 Ashland, you’ve stolen my heart.

3. Ashland’s Food Scene: More Than Just a Small-Town Affair

Ashland might be small, but its food scene is anything but. With over 80 restaurants and cafés, this town has something for everyone—vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians, and yes, even those die-hard carnivores in your travel crew.

A must-try spot for dinner is Blue Toba, where you can savor authentic Indonesian cuisine. Their Gulai with tofu is a flavor explosion—spicy, savory, and packed with traditional spices straight from Indonesia. You can practically taste the chef’s homeland in every bite.

Pro Tip: Blue Toba made it to the big leagues after a feature on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, but don’t worry—this local gem hasn’t lost its authentic touch!

Blue Toba

3. Breakfast in Ashland: Start Your Day Right

Ashland does breakfast right, and there are a few standout spots you won’t want to miss. Morning Glory is a local institution known for its huevos rancheros—spicy, satisfying, and perfect for kickstarting your day. Just be prepared to wait if you visit on the weekend—this place is a favorite for both tourists and locals.

Closer to Lithia Park, Brother’s Restaurant is another solid choice. They keep things old-school, so bring cash (they charge extra for card payments). If you’re craving something organic, thoughtfully curated, and locally sourced, head over to Rogue Valley Roasting Co. (RoCo). Situated in the Railroad District, it offers anywhere from rich single-origin lattes to house-baked pastries—and you can relax on their sunny patio with a book or your laptop.

If you’re craving something organic and farm-fresh, I used to recommend Hither Coffee and Goods… but here’s the scoop: Hither has since closed its doors (cue foodie tears 😢). Luckily, in its place, a new gem has blossomed, Zi Spice, and trust me, it’s worth pulling up a chair for.

Zi Spice leans into flavor with a playful, spice-forward menu and a focus on eco-conscious, locally sourced goodness. I popped in for lunch and couldn’t resist trying their house-made chai. The Vanilla Chai was smooth, sweet, and just a touch spicy—like a hug in a cup. If you’re a true spice devotee, go for the regular masala chai—it packs that cozy, warming punch. They even get a little adventurous with unique pairings like Rose-Cardamom, which feels both floral and grounding. Oh, and their gluten-free chocolate chip cookies? To me, they have just the faintest hint of cardamom, which makes them taste like comfort and nostalgia in one bite.

For something heartier, I sampled their Soma Chaat Bowl (I think that’s the name!)—a small but mighty portion at around $8. It’s light, fresh, and brimming with Ayurvedic vibes: think natural, nourishing ingredients layered with a mint chutney. Not your typical chaat, but definitely an ode to Indian-inspired wellness cuisine.

Beyond the food, Zi Spice is rooted in sustainability. They craft small-batch spices and confections that celebrate Southern Oregon’s local bounty, blended with fair-trade chocolate (which I can also recommend) and an eye for eco-conscious details. It’s the kind of place where you feel good about what you’re eating—and where your taste buds feel like they’ve gone on a little global adventure without leaving town.

So while Ashland had to say goodbye to Hither, Zi Spice has stepped in with heart, flavor, and some seriously creative chai. A loss, yes—but also a delicious new chapter.

Fueling up for another Ashland adventure

4. Ashland’s Restaurants: A Blend of Local and International Flavors

Ashland’s food scene is surprisingly global for such a small town. In addition to Indonesian fare at Blue Toba (Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives TV show), you’ll find Mexican, Italian, and even Thai flavors around town. But let’s not forget Ashland’s homegrown favorites like Skout Taphouse And Provisions, where the fish & chips are legendary.

Pair those fish & chips with a local craft beer, or in my case, something non-alcoholic because beer and mornings don’t mix for me. The cozy outdoor fire pits make it a perfect spot to hang out after a day of exploring.

Pro Tip: If you’re there in the evening, grab a seat by the fire pit and snap a photo for a cozy night-out vibe. Perfect for Pinterest!

5. Living in Ashland: More Than Just a Vacation Spot

Living in Ashland is a bit like stepping into a small-town fairytale—except it’s real life. I’ve called Ashland home for a few years now, and despite the rising cost of living, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Sure, some of my favorite spots, like The Black Sheep Pub & Restaurant, have closed due to economic pressures, but new places continue to pop up, keeping Ashland’s foodie scene vibrant.

And let’s not forget about the wildlife! Turkeys strut around Lithia Park as if they own the place, and it’s not uncommon to see deer casually crossing the road. It’s these little quirks that make Ashland feel like home to me.

Wildlife crossing! Only in Ashland…

Final Thoughts: Why You Should Visit Ashland, Oregon

Whether you’re coming for the food, the coffee, or the natural beauty, Ashland is one of those places that will steal your heart. From the quirky, free-roaming wildlife to the eclectic mix of local and international cuisine, it’s a place where you can truly slow down and savor life’s simple pleasures. And if you’re like me—an introvert who loves a good meal—Ashland will feel like home, even if you’re just passing through.

Why I Love Solo Female Travel (And How You Can Too!)

Why I Love Solo Female Travel (And How You Can Too!)

As a solo female traveler, I’ve learned there’s nothing quite like the freedom to explore at your own pace. I come from a big family and travel with them often, but I always find myself craving the solo adventure—where I call the shots, change plans on a whim, and never have to apologize for skipping the shopping trips. (Looking at you, sis!) While my sisters could shop till they drop, I prefer exploring new places and enjoying delicious food. One thing we do agree on, though, is that food is always worth the adventure.

But here’s the thing: I didn’t inherit my mom’s love for cooking (she was a kitchen wizard), but I did inherit her great taste buds and love for food. So, when I hit the road solo, it’s all about finding the best restaurants that cater to my vegetarian lifestyle—especially when the rest of my family is all about the meat.

In this post, I’m sharing some of my best tips for enjoying solo travel life as a woman, from picking out the perfect spot for a solo meal to staying safe when you’re out exploring the world. Whether you’re an experienced traveler or just starting, these tips will help make your next solo trip stress-free and full of delicious memories.

Why I Love Solo Travel

One of the questions I’m constantly asked by family,  friends,  and coworkers is, “Aren’t you afraid to travel alone?” My answer? “Nope!”—but only if you’re smart about it. Being streetwise and cautious is the key to enjoying solo adventures without fear.

For me, traveling alone is freeing. It’s a chance to recharge my introverted batteries and explore at my own pace. When I get tired of shopping (not a big shopper, TBH), I pivot and dive into something that excites me more—like hiking a new trail or checking out an intriguing museum. It’s also a way to interact with the world on my terms, which for introverts, can be a big deal. One day it’s all about being immersed in nature, and the next, I’m sitting at a cozy café people-watching with my coffee in hand.

Solo hikes: just me, my thoughts, and the great outdoors. The perfect recharge.

Vegetarian on the Road: It’s Easier Now!

I come from a family of carnivores, so you can imagine the challenge of traveling with them as a vegetarian. But when I travel solo, I get to choose the places that accommodate my food preferences, and trust me—there are so many more options today than there used to be. Thanks to apps that make finding veggie-friendly restaurants a breeze, eating well while traveling solo is easier than ever.

Here’s a pro tip: When in doubt, join online communities like Solo Female Travelers on Facebook. It’s an incredible group of women who love to travel solo, and it’s a great place to get recommendations for restaurants, places to visit, and even safety tips from other like-minded ladies. The support you’ll find there is invaluable, and it’s like having a global travel buddy network at your fingertips.

Plant-based eats? Yes, please! Finding veggie-friendly spots while traveling solo has never been easier.

Safety First: Trust Your Gut

Okay, let’s talk about the elephant in the room: safety. I grew up in the Gen X era, where we were taught to be polite and accommodating, but here’s the deal: trust your instincts. If something feels off, don’t be afraid to speak up, change your plans, or get out of an uncomfortable situation. Seriously, your gut is your best travel companion.

A few safety tips to keep in mind:

  • Walk with confidence: Even if you’re in a new city, act like you know where you’re going. A confident stride can deter unwanted attention.
  • Use your phone smartly: Connect your phone to Google Maps and listen to walking directions through one earbud, while leaving the other ear open for your surroundings. People will think you’re on a call or listening to music, and you won’t stick out as a tourist.
  • Mind your wallet: Use an RFID-blocking wallet to protect against digital pickpockets and shimmers (newer devices that can steal your credit card info via Bluetooth). Trust me—staying safe while handling your money is a must.

Walk with purpose. Confidence is your best tool when exploring a new city solo.

Solo Dining: Own It!

Eating alone can feel intimidating at first, but once you embrace it, it’s actually a lot of fun. Whether it’s grabbing a window seat to people-watch or snagging a table with a view, solo dining can be one of the highlights of your trip. Plus, the freedom to choose exactly what you want to eat. Chef’s kiss!

I’ve heard that some European restaurants might turn solo diners away (still haven’t experienced that, though), but in the U.S., it’s never been an issue for me. If you feel a little nervous about eating alone, here are a few tips to make it easier:

  • Sit by the window: People-watching is endlessly entertaining, and it makes solo dining feel less awkward.
  • Bring a book or journal: If you don’t feel like chatting with anyone, a good book or sketchpad can keep you occupied.
  • Snap some photos: Yes, you’re alone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t document the experience! A solo meal is a perfect time to snap some drool-worthy food photos for the ‘gram.

Solo dining is all about the views—and the food!

Tech-Savvy Safety Hacks

One of the most stressful parts of solo travel used to be managing your finances on the go. These days, though, you can use technology to protect yourself from scammers and hackers. Here’s what I recommend:

  • RFID-blocking wallet: Prevents electronic pickpockets from stealing your card info.
  • Contactless payments: Use your phone’s mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Google Pay) to make payments without risking card skimming.
  • Notify your bank: Let your bank know when and where you’re traveling so they don’t flag your transactions as suspicious or block your card.

I learned the hard way when traveling with a group in Ireland, where one of our friends had his card info stolen in Spain—while he was with us in Dublin. Scammers are smart, so stay one step ahead by securing your finances before you even leave.

Contactless payments for the win! Keep your travels stress-free and scam-proof.

Embrace the Solo Adventure!

Solo travel as a woman can be one of the most rewarding and empowering experiences of your life. With the right mindset, a little preparation, and the freedom to follow your own schedule, you’ll find that the world is truly yours to explore.

So, the next time someone asks, “Aren’t you afraid to travel alone?” You can smile and say, “Not at all.” You’ve got the tips, the tools, and the confidence to make every solo trip unforgettable.

Stay curious, stay safe, and keep exploring!

Ashland Farmers Market: Your Tuesday Tradition

Kicking things off with a fan favorite, the Ashland Tuesday Market runs from March to November at the ScienceWorks Hands-on Museum (1500 E Main St.). If you’ve ever driven by and seen those colorful tents, you’re missing out if you haven’t stopped by!

Pro Tip: The vendors don’t start selling until 8:30 am, but the early bird gets the good parking spot—arrive around 8:15 am. And don’t forget to grab a loaf of bread. Pair it with fresh berries or some local jam, and voila, breakfast perfection!

Bonus Photo: Me holding a delicious coffee cake crumb muffin, which I picked up from one of the local vendors. Because nothing says “market day” like starting it off with a sweet treat!

Petite and Sweet: Ashland Saturday Market

Can’t make it on Tuesday? No worries! The Ashland Saturday Market runs from May to October, and while it’s smaller than the Tuesday market, it’s every bit as charming. Located in downtown Ashland on Oak Street, it’s the perfect stop after your morning coffee.

Oh, and yes, I absolutely recommend picking up that second loaf of bread—because one is never enough.

A Medford Must: Thursday Market

If you’re feeling adventurous, hop over to Medford for the Thursday Market at Hawthorne Park. With rows upon rows of fresh produce, local crafts, and more, this one’s a treasure trove for anyone looking to stock up for the week.

Trust me, you won’t leave without a basket full of colorful veggies or fruit, and probably some homemade soap because… why not?

Medford’s Finest! You can’t leave without a basket full of color.

Farm Stands & U-Pick Fun

Now, if farmers markets aren’t your thing (but really, why wouldn’t they be?), Southern Oregon also has some amazing farm stands and U-pick farms. I’ll be honest, I haven’t hit all of them yet, but one of my favorites so far is Rusted Gate Farm in Central Point. Not only do they have locally grown produce, but their bread and jams are to die for.

Speaking of jams, don’t miss out on marionberry—a local favorite! You’ll find this delicious berry transformed into jams, jellies, and even pies. It’s a sweet taste of Southern Oregon you don’t want to miss.

Weekend brunch, sorted. Thanks, Rusted Gate!

For more local farm stands and U-pick farms, check out the full list here —trust me, it’s a rabbit hole worth falling into.

What’s Next? A Sunday Market, Perhaps?

As the fall season winds down, word on the street is that there might be a Sunday market coming to Ashland! I don’t have the full scoop yet, but I’ve heard from an insider at the university that it’s being considered for one of the parking lots. It’s still in the works, so we’ll have to wait and see, but stay tuned—this could be an exciting new weekend option for fresh, local finds.

I’ll keep my ear to the ground and share details as soon as I know more!

Is it winter yet? I’m already dreaming of the winter market!

Fresh Finds Await

So, whether you’re a seasoned market-goer or just getting started, Southern Oregon has a market or farm stand with your name on it. So grab your tote bag, bring your appetite, and dive into the local goodness.

That’s it for today’s bite-sized adventure—I hope you find your way to one (or all!) of these fantastic markets soon.
