6 Best Pizza Joints in Ashland, Oregon for Every Craving

Welcome to Ashland, where the small-town charm meets big flavors. As an East Coaster who now calls this quirky college town home, I couldn’t resist searching for the best pie in Ashland. After all, every college town needs a solid pizza joint, right? (Imagine me saying this in my best fake New York accent, à la Jon Stewart). Whether you’re a solo traveler, a student on a budget, or just craving a slice of cheesy goodness, I’ve got the lowdown on the top savory round spots in town. Grab a napkin, we’re about to dig in!

Pizza in Ashland: A Slice of the Good Life

In my slice quest, I’ve found the good, the great, and the “meh, it’s pizza.” Let’s break down Ashland’s pizza scene so you can make the best choice, no matter what kind of pie vibe you’re after. From grab-and-go slices to sit-down artisan pies, Ashland has something for everyone. Here are my top picks for pizza spots that will leave you with a happy belly and a smile.

  1. Martolli’s Hand-Tossed Pizza: A Slice of NYC in Ashland

Looking for a New York-style slice that doesn’t disappoint? Martolli’s is your go-to. Recommended by someone who lived in NYC for years (and you know you can trust that pizza opinion), this place serves up the closest thing to a real New York thin-crust slice in town. It is located in the Ashland Plaza and offer more then just a slice or two. Martolli’s is perfect for those looking for a quick and satisfying bite.

What to Expect:

  • Thin, crispy crust that folds like a true NYC slice.
  • Pizza by the slice or whole pies (perfect for solo diners).
  • Budget-friendly for students and travelers alike.

Craving a slice of NYC? Martolli’s has got you covered!

  1. Northwest Pizza & Pub: Where Pizza Meets the Post-Game Hangout

Need a spot for Italian favorite location for after the game? Northwest Pizza is your answer. This place screams “after-sports hangout” with its huge open dining area, arcade games, pinball, and pool tables. You’ll find plenty of room for the whole team, and let’s be honest, a slice tastes better with a side of victory. The atmosphere is a bit loud for my taste, but if you’re traveling with a group or want more than just pizza, this place has it all.

What to Expect:

  • Family-friendly with tons of space and TVs for sports fans.
  • A menu that goes beyond pizza: appetizers, burgers, pasta, you name it.
  • Arcade games and pool tables—perfect for kids and adults alike.

Post-game cheese goodness just hits different at Northwest Pizza. Grab a slice and unwind!

It’s not just about pizza here, though their pies are delicious. It’s the whole package—fun, food, and space to stretch out after cheering on your favorite team.

  1. The Great American Pizza Co. (GAPCO): The Sour-Dough Standout

GAPCO is a student favorite, thanks to its location near the college dorms and its unique take on crust—sourdough! While the pizza is slightly more expensive than Martolli’s and has a sourdough crust, the flavors are worth it. If you love garlic (like me), try Snappy Garden but the Mediterranean is good too. The Snappy Garden was the garlicky goodness with a little kick that’ll leave you wanting more.

What to Expect:

  • Sourdough crust with a delightful chewiness.
  • Specialty slices and pies that cater to garlic lovers.
  • A vegetarian-friendly menu with loads of options.

Garlic lovers unite! The Snappy Garden at GAPCO is calling your name.

GAPCO may not have that classic NYC slice, but the sourdough base gives it a twist that’s hard to resist. It’s great for those who like their pizza with a bit more flavor complexity.

  1. Creekside Pizza Bistro: Artisan Vibes with a Side of Beer

For those nights when you want a little more than just a pie, Creekside Pizza Bistro is the place to go. This spot has a full bar, pool tables, and a cozy atmosphere that’s more “restaurant” than “pizza joint.” You won’t find pizza by the slice here, but their artisan pies make up for it with toppings that are anything but ordinary.

What to Expect:

  • Artisan pizzas with gourmet toppings (roasted red onions and garlic, anyone?).
  • Full bar and a relaxed, restaurant-style vibe.
  • Slightly pricier, but hey, it’s artisan pizza!

Fancy a gourmet pizza night? Creekside’s got your back.

The Bootsie, with its roasted red onions and fresh herbs, is my personal favorite. It’s pricier than your average slice joint, but worth it for a special night out.

  1. Clyde’s Corner: Worth the Drive for Wood-Fired Perfection

Okay, technically this one’s in Phoenix, Oregon, but trust me, it’s worth the short drive. Clyde’s Corner offers wood-fired pizzas with some of the most unique flavor combos I’ve ever seen. Garlic herb oil, roasted zucchini, and roasted corn on pizza? Yes, please. The outdoor seating area is perfect for kicking back with a slice, a cold drink, and some fresh air.

What to Expect:

  • Wood-fired pizzas with creative, unexpected toppings.
  • A relaxed, open-air vibe with umbrella tables and heaters.
  • Weekly pizza specials that’ll keep you coming back for more.

Wood-fired pies and fresh air? Clyde’s Corner in Phoenix has the perfect combo.

Follow them on Facebook to stay up-to-date on their weekly specials—you never know what delicious creation they’ll come up with next!

  1. Papa Murphy’s: A Fresh Favorite, Now a Fond Memory

For years, Papa Murphy’s was the go-to spot for budget-friendly, bake-at-home pizza that came fresh and ready for your oven. Their take-and-bake approach made it easy to enjoy a piping-hot pizza in the comfort of your own home—no dine-out required. With fresh dough and ingredients prepared daily, customizable options, and prices that fit any budget, it was a hit with pizza lovers looking for quality and convenience.

Unfortunately, as of November 15, 2024, this beloved pizza spot has closed its doors. While it’s sad to say goodbye, the memories of sharing a perfectly baked Papa Murphy’s pizza at home will live on in the hearts (and stomachs) of its fans.

Papa Murphy’s: Bake It Yourself, Fresh and Hot

Nothing beats pizza fresh out of the oven—especially when you baked it yourself!

Why Ashland, Oregon Should Be Your Next Travel Spot

If you’ve never heard of Ashland, Oregon, let me be the first to tell you—it’s a hidden gem. Nestled in Southern Oregon, this small town is a dreamy destination for those seeking slow travel, beautiful scenery, and an impressive food scene. You might know it for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival known as OSF in the area, but trust me, there’s more to Southern Oregon Gem than theater. From its friendly locals (both human and animal—deer regularly cross the road here) to its flourishing foodie culture, Ashland offers something for everyone.

When you’re tired of the fast pace of city life and looking for a place to slow down, Ashland’s relaxed vibe will welcome you with open arms. And yes, you’ll literally have to slow down—deer have the right of way here!

The Best Time to Visit Ashland

I can’t stress this enough—fall is hands down the best time to visit this charming town. The air cools down, the trees show off their vibrant colors, and the summer smoke (yes, that’s a thing in Southern Oregon) clears out. Plus, the hiking trails in and around Ashland are at their best, and if you’re into skiing, Mt. Ashland is just a stone’s throw away.

If you’re planning a trip in the fall, don’t miss the chance to experience Ashland’s Farmer’s Market at ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum. It’s the perfect spot for local produce, food trucks, and a cup of coffee. And speaking of coffee…

  1. The Coffee Culture: Fueling Ashland’s Soul

You can’t talk about Ashland without mentioning the coffee. Ashlanders love their brew, and coffee shops are practically on every corner. My personal favorite is Rogue Valley Roasting Company, where I stop for a morning latte to kickstart my day. You’ll spot hipsters and locals alike with coffee in hand, basking in the warm, cozy vibes this town exudes.

If you’re snapping a shot of your cup of Joe for the ‘gram, why not pair it with the stunning backdrop of Lithia Park in the fall? The golden leaves and misty mornings make for an Instagram-worthy moment! Trust me, nothing says Ashland quite like a warm cappuccino and the rich colors of autumn.

 Ashland, you’ve stolen my heart.

3. Ashland’s Food Scene: More Than Just a Small-Town Affair

Ashland might be small, but its food scene is anything but. With over 80 restaurants and cafés, this town has something for everyone—vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians, and yes, even those die-hard carnivores in your travel crew.

A must-try spot for dinner is Blue Toba, where you can savor authentic Indonesian cuisine. Their Gulai with tofu is a flavor explosion—spicy, savory, and packed with traditional spices straight from Indonesia. You can practically taste the chef’s homeland in every bite.

Pro Tip: Blue Toba made it to the big leagues after a feature on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, but don’t worry—this local gem hasn’t lost its authentic touch!

3. Breakfast in Ashland: Start Your Day Right

Ashland does breakfast right, and there are a few standout spots you won’t want to miss. Morning Glory is a local institution known for its huevos rancheros—spicy, satisfying, and perfect for kickstarting your day. Just be prepared to wait if you visit on the weekend—this place is a favorite for both tourists and locals.

Closer to Lithia Park, Brother’s Restaurant is another solid choice. They keep things old-school, so bring cash (they charge extra for card payments). If you’re craving something organic, thoughtfully curated, and locally sourced, head over to Rogue Valley Roasting Co. (RoCo). Situated in the Railroad District, it offers anywhere from rich single-origin lattes to house-baked pastries—and you can relax on their sunny patio with a book or your laptop.

If you’re craving something organic and farm-fresh, I used to recommend Hither Coffee and Goods… but here’s the scoop: Hither has since closed its doors (cue foodie tears 😢). Luckily, in its place, a new gem has blossomed, Zi Spice, and trust me, it’s worth pulling up a chair for.

Zi Spice leans into flavor with a playful, spice-forward menu and a focus on eco-conscious, locally sourced goodness. I popped in for lunch and couldn’t resist trying their house-made chai. The Vanilla Chai was smooth, sweet, and just a touch spicy—like a hug in a cup. If you’re a true spice devotee, go for the regular masala chai—it packs that cozy, warming punch. They even get a little adventurous with unique pairings like Rose-Cardamom, which feels both floral and grounding. Oh, and their gluten-free chocolate chip cookies? To me, they have just the faintest hint of cardamom, which makes them taste like comfort and nostalgia in one bite.

For something heartier, I sampled their Soma Chaat Bowl (I think that’s the name!)—a small but mighty portion at around $8. It’s light, fresh, and brimming with Ayurvedic vibes: think natural, nourishing ingredients layered with a mint chutney. Not your typical chaat, but definitely an ode to Indian-inspired wellness cuisine.

Beyond the food, Zi Spice is rooted in sustainability. They craft small-batch spices and confections that celebrate Southern Oregon’s local bounty, blended with fair-trade chocolate (which I can also recommend) and an eye for eco-conscious details. It’s the kind of place where you feel good about what you’re eating—and where your taste buds feel like they’ve gone on a little global adventure without leaving town.

So while Ashland had to say goodbye to Hither, Zi Spice has stepped in with heart, flavor, and some seriously creative chai. A loss, yes—but also a delicious new chapter.

Fueling up for another Ashland adventure

4. Ashland’s Restaurants: A Blend of Local and International Flavors

Ashland’s food scene is surprisingly global for such a small town. In addition to Indonesian fare at Blue Toba (Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives TV show), you’ll find Mexican, Italian, and even Thai flavors around town. But let’s not forget Ashland’s homegrown favorites like Skout Taphouse And Provisions, where the fish & chips are legendary.

Pair those fish & chips with a local craft beer, or in my case, something non-alcoholic because beer and mornings don’t mix for me. The cozy outdoor fire pits make it a perfect spot to hang out after a day of exploring.

Pro Tip: If you’re there in the evening, grab a seat by the fire pit and snap a photo for a cozy night-out vibe. Perfect for Pinterest!

5. Living in Ashland: More Than Just a Vacation Spot

Living in Ashland is a bit like stepping into a small-town fairytale—except it’s real life. I’ve called Ashland home for a few years now, and despite the rising cost of living, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Sure, some of my favorite spots, like The Black Sheep Pub & Restaurant, have closed due to economic pressures, but new places continue to pop up, keeping Ashland’s foodie scene vibrant.

And let’s not forget about the wildlife! Turkeys strut around Lithia Park as if they own the place, and it’s not uncommon to see deer casually crossing the road. It’s these little quirks that make Ashland feel like home to me.

Wildlife crossing! Only in Ashland…

Final Thoughts: Why You Should Visit Ashland, Oregon

Whether you’re coming for the food, the coffee, or the natural beauty, Ashland is one of those places that will steal your heart. From the quirky, free-roaming wildlife to the eclectic mix of local and international cuisine, it’s a place where you can truly slow down and savor life’s simple pleasures. And if you’re like me—an introvert who loves a good meal—Ashland will feel like home, even if you’re just passing through.
