Mornings are usually a bit cooler, hovering around 70°F to 80°F, but by the afternoon, you’ll feel that intense heat.

Pro Tip: If you’re traveling in July or August, plan your outdoor activities for the early morning or after dinner when the sun’s heat is more bearable. The evenings often cool off around 10 p.m., making for perfect sunset strolls.

In 2020, the Almeta Fire burned through the Rogue Valley, devastating many local communities and forcing thousands to evacuate. On September 4, 2024, I was once again reminded of the ever-present danger when a brush fire broke out near where I live. Fortunately, local firefighters were quick to respond, and the fire was contained after only affecting 13 acres.

Pro Tip: Download the Watch Duty app for real-time updates on active fires in the area. It provides you with wind patterns and other important info, which could be crucial if you’re traveling during peak wildfire season.

So, is Ashland worth visiting despite the heat and wildfire risks? Absolutely. While you do need to be prepared, there are plenty of ways to have a safe and enjoyable summer visit.

Here are a few quick tips to stay cool and safe:

  • Stay Hydrated: Ashland’s dry heat can be relentless. Always carry a reusable water bottle and refill often. Local cafes often have water stations too.
  • Plan Your Itinerary Wisely: As mentioned, the heat is worst in the afternoon, so make the most of your mornings and evenings for outdoor activities. Spend the hottest part of the day indoors exploring the local museums, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, or enjoying a leisurely lunch at one of Ashland’s amazing vegetarian and pescatarian-friendly spots like The Greenleaf Restaurant.
  • Stay Updated on Fire Risks: As wildfires are a real threat, make sure to stay updated on current conditions. Aside from the Watch Duty app, you can join the Riverstone Commons ~ Ashland, OR Facebook group to stay in the loop with the local community.

Nestled in Southern Oregon, this small town is a dreamy destination for those seeking slow travel, beautiful scenery, and an impressive food scene. You might know it for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival known as OSF in the area, but trust me, there’s more to Southern Oregon Gem than theater. From its friendly locals (both human and animal—deer regularly cross the road here) to its flourishing foodie culture, Ashland offers something for everyone.

When you’re tired of the fast pace of city life and looking for a place to slow down, Ashland’s relaxed vibe will welcome you with open arms. And yes, you’ll literally have to slow down—deer have the right of way here!

The Best Time to Visit This Southern Oregon Town

I can’t stress this enough—fall is hands down the best time to visit this charming town. The air cools down, the trees show off their vibrant colors, and the summer smoke (yes, that’s a thing in Southern Oregon) clears out. Plus, the hiking trails in and around Ashland are at their best, and if you’re into skiing, Mt. Ashland is just a stone’s throw away.

If you’re planning a trip in the fall, don’t miss the chance to experience Ashland’s Farmer’s Market at ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum. It’s the perfect spot for local produce, food trucks, and a cup of coffee. And speaking of coffee…

My personal favorite is Rogue Valley Roasting Company, where I stop for a morning latte to kickstart my day. You’ll spot hipsters and locals alike with coffee in hand, basking in the warm, cozy vibes this town exudes.

If you’re snapping a shot of your cup of Joe for the ‘gram, why not pair it with the stunning backdrop of Lithia Park in the fall? The golden leaves and misty mornings make for an Instagram-worthy moment! Trust me, nothing says Ashland quite like a warm cappuccino and the rich colors of autumn.

A must-try spot for dinner is Blue Toba, where you can savor authentic Indonesian cuisine. Their Gulai with tofu is a flavor explosion—spicy, savory, and packed with traditional spices straight from Indonesia. You can practically taste the chef’s homeland in every bite.

Pro Tip: Blue Toba made it to the big leagues after a feature on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, but don’t worry—this local gem hasn’t lost its authentic touch!

3. Breakfast in Ashland: Start Your Day Right

Ashland does breakfast right, and there are a few standout spots you won’t want to miss. Morning Glory is a local institution known for its huevos rancheros—spicy, satisfying, and perfect for kickstarting your day. Just be prepared to wait if you visit on the weekend—this place is a favorite for both tourists and locals.

Closer to Lithia Park, Brother’s Restaurant is another solid choice. They keep things old-school, so bring cash (they charge extra for card payments). If you’re craving something organic, thoughtfully curated, and locally sourced, head over to Rogue Valley Roasting Co. (RoCo). Situated in the Railroad District, it offers anywhere from rich single-origin lattes to house-baked pastries—and you can relax on their sunny patio with a book or your laptop.

If you’re craving something organic and farm-fresh, I used to recommend Hither Coffee and Goods… but here’s the scoop: Hither has since closed its doors (cue foodie tears 😢). Luckily, in its place, a new gem has blossomed, Zi Spice, and trust me, it’s worth pulling up a chair for.

Zi Spice leans into flavor with a playful, spice-forward menu and a focus on eco-conscious, locally sourced goodness. I popped in for lunch and couldn’t resist trying their house-made chai. The Vanilla Chai was smooth, sweet, and just a touch spicy—like a hug in a cup. If you’re a true spice devotee, go for the regular masala chai—it packs that cozy, warming punch. They even get a little adventurous with unique pairings like Rose-Cardamom, which feels both floral and grounding. Oh, and their gluten-free chocolate chip cookies? To me, they have just the faintest hint of cardamom, which makes them taste like comfort and nostalgia in one bite.

For something heartier, I sampled their Soma Chaat Bowl (I think that’s the name!)—a small but mighty portion at around $8. It’s light, fresh, and brimming with Ayurvedic vibes: think natural, nourishing ingredients layered with a mint chutney. Not your typical chaat, but definitely an ode to Indian-inspired wellness cuisine.

Beyond the food, Zi Spice is rooted in sustainability. They craft small-batch spices and confections that celebrate Southern Oregon’s local bounty, blended with fair-trade chocolate (which I can also recommend) and an eye for eco-conscious details. It’s the kind of place where you feel good about what you’re eating—and where your taste buds feel like they’ve gone on a little global adventure without leaving town.

So while Ashland had to say goodbye to Hither, Zi Spice has stepped in with heart, flavor, and some seriously creative chai. A loss, yes—but also a delicious new chapter.

4. Ashland’s Restaurants: A Blend of Local and International Flavors

Ashland’s food scene is surprisingly global for such a small town. In addition to Indonesian fare at Blue Toba (Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives TV show), you’ll find Mexican, Italian, and even Thai flavors around town. But let’s not forget Ashland’s homegrown favorites like Skout Taphouse And Provisions, where the fish & chips are legendary.

Pair those fish & chips with a local craft beer, or in my case, something non-alcoholic because beer and mornings don’t mix for me. The cozy outdoor fire pits make it a perfect spot to hang out after a day of exploring.

Pro Tip: If you’re there in the evening, grab a seat by the fire pit and snap a photo for a cozy night-out vibe. Perfect for Pinterest!

5. Living in Ashland: More Than Just a Vacation Spot

Living in Ashland is a bit like stepping into a small-town fairytale—except it’s real life. I’ve called Ashland home for a few years now, and despite the rising cost of living, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Sure, some of my favorite spots, like The Black Sheep Pub & Restaurant, have closed due to economic pressures, but new places continue to pop up, keeping Ashland’s foodie scene vibrant.

And let’s not forget about the wildlife! Turkeys strut around Lithia Park as if they own the place, and it’s not uncommon to see deer casually crossing the road. It’s these little quirks that make Ashland feel like home to me.
