Vegetarian & Pescatarian Tips

One thing I always appreciate while traveling is finding restaurants that make it easy to eat well without feeling like an afterthought.

Jim Thorpe pleasantly surprised me.

Several restaurants—including Stone Row Pub & Eatery, Moya, Myst, and Broadway Grille—offer vegetarian-friendly lunch and dinner options, but will be fine for breakfast.

That means you can enjoy your getaway without spending hours searching for something that fits your dietary preferences.

A Few Dining Tips

To make the most of your visit:

  • Visit popular restaurants early during peak fall weekends.
  • Reservations are recommended for fine dining, especially at Moya.
  • If you have dietary restrictions, check menus online before you go.
  • Save room for dessert—many local cafés and bakeries offer seasonal treats like pumpkin desserts and apple pastries.

Final Thoughts

One of the best parts of traveling is discovering local restaurants that become part of the memories.

Maybe it’s the cozy coffee shop where you warmed up after a chilly morning walk.

The little pub where you shared stories after riding the scenic railway.

Or the elegant dinner that capped off a perfect day in the Pocono Mountains.

Jim Thorpe isn’t just a destination for beautiful scenery—it’s a town where good food, welcoming hospitality, and historic charm come together. Whether you’re searching for a relaxing brunch, a memorable date night, or vegetarian-friendly dining, you’ll find plenty of delicious reasons to linger just a little longer.

Stay curious, stay hungry, and keep exploring!

There’s something magical about fall on the East Coast.

Maybe it’s the crisp morning air, the mountains painted in brilliant shades of red and gold, or the smell of fresh cider drifting through historic downtown streets. While New England often gets all the attention, one Pennsylvania town quietly steals the show every autumn.

Welcome to Jim Thorpe—often called the “Switzerland of America.” Nestled in the Pocono Mountains, this charming Victorian town offers the perfect blend of history, outdoor adventure, cozy cafés, boutique shopping, and some of the most spectacular fall foliage you’ll find anywhere in Pennsylvania.

Why Visit Jim Thorpe in the Fall?

Fall transforms Jim Thorpe into a postcard.

Historic brick buildings glow beneath colorful maple trees, mountain views stretch for miles, and every street feels like you’ve stepped into a Hallmark movie.

It’s one of those rare destinations where slowing down is part of the experience.

Spend the day wandering through art galleries, discovering local shops, sipping warm coffee, and simply enjoying the season.

Ride the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway

One of the biggest reasons visitors come each fall is to experience the famous Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway.

The vintage train winds through the breathtaking Lehigh Gorge, offering incredible views of forests bursting with autumn color. It’s one of the easiest ways to experience Pennsylvania’s fall foliage without hiking miles into the mountains. During autumn, special foliage excursions make this one of the area’s most popular attractions, so purchasing tickets in advance is highly recommended.

If you’re someone who enjoys photography—or simply wants to sit back and soak in the scenery—this ride belongs on your itinerary.

Wander Through Historic Downtown

One of my favorite ways to experience a new town is simply to walk.

Jim Thorpe is wonderfully walkable.

As you stroll through downtown, you’ll find:

Nearly every corner has another beautiful Victorian building waiting to be photographed.

Don’t rush.

The charm is found between destinations.

Tour the Historic Mansions

History lovers will have plenty to explore.

The elegant Victorian homes that once belonged to wealthy industrialists now offer fascinating tours into the town’s past. The beautifully preserved architecture gives visitors a glimpse into life during Pennsylvania’s coal boom years.

Even if you don’t tour every mansion, simply admiring them from the outside is worth the walk.

Explore the Outdoors

Jim Thorpe isn’t just about history.

Nature surrounds the town.

Popular outdoor activities include:

Whether you’re an experienced hiker or simply enjoy peaceful walks surrounded by colorful leaves, there’s no shortage of beautiful places to explore.

Lehigh Gorge State Park, Glen Onoko Falls

Other Places to Explore in the Area

Visit During the Fall Foliage Festival

If you really want to experience Jim Thorpe at its liveliest, plan your trip during the annual Fall Foliage Festival.

For several weekends in October, downtown comes alive with:

  • Local artisans
  • Handmade crafts
  • Seasonal food vendors
  • Live music
  • Family-friendly activities
  • Special shopping events
  • Scenic train rides

It’s one of the Pocono Mountains’ signature autumn celebrations and attracts visitors from across the region.

Seasonal Events Throughout the Year

Even beyond the Fall Foliage Festival, Jim Thorpe hosts events throughout the year, including concerts, ghost tours, holiday celebrations, art festivals, and seasonal train excursions. If you’re planning your visit, it’s worth checking the town’s event calendar to see what’s happening during your stay.

A Few Tips for Visiting During Peak Fall

Because Jim Thorpe has become one of Pennsylvania’s favorite fall destinations, weekends can be very busy.

To make your visit more enjoyable:

  • Arrive early in the morning.
  • Reserve train tickets ahead of time.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Consider visiting on a weekday if your schedule allows.
  • Be patient—popular fall destinations often come with crowds, especially during peak leaf season.

The extra planning is well worth it.

Where to Eat

After a morning of exploring, treat yourself to one of the town’s cozy cafés or locally owned restaurants.

You’ll find everything from coffee shops serving homemade pastries to casual pubs, pizza, international cuisine, and farm-to-table dining. Many restaurants offer outdoor seating during the fall, making it easy to enjoy the crisp mountain air while watching the colorful streets come alive.

You can find those places here

Final Thoughts

There are places you visit because they’re popular.

Then some places stay with you.

Jim Thorpe feels like one of those places.

Maybe it’s the historic streets.

Maybe it’s the mountain scenery.

Or maybe it’s the simple joy of wandering through a town where every corner seems painted in the colors of autumn.

If you’re looking for a fall getaway filled with scenic beauty, small-town charm, and plenty of opportunities to slow down, Jim Thorpe is waiting.

Sometimes the best adventures aren’t about checking off attractions—they’re about finding a place that makes you want to linger just a little longer.

Stay curious, stay hungry, and keep exploring!

Weekend in Coos Bay, Oregon: A Slow Travel Coastal Escape (Food, Rainy Days & Hidden Gems)

Weekend in Coos Bay, Oregon: A Slow Travel Coastal Escape (Food, Rainy Days & Hidden Gems)

Plan a cozy weekend in Coos Bay, Oregon, with cafés, coastal views, and hidden gems; perfect for slow, introvert-friendly travel.

A Weekend That Didn’t Ask Me to Rush

I didn’t come to Coos Bay with a checklist.

No “top 10 must-dos.”
No pressure to maximize every hour.

Just a quiet kind of curiosity, and the hope that I’d find a few good meals, a cozy place to sit, and maybe a moment where everything slowed down.

And it did.

Coos Bay isn’t loud about what it offers. It doesn’t try to impress you right away. But if you give it space, if you move slowly, stop often, and follow what feels good, it opens up in the softest way.

Rain on the windows.
Warm coffee in your hands.
A table for one… and no one rushing you out.

Let’s Dig In.

Quick-Glance: Coos Bay Weekend Guide

  • Best photo spot: Shore Acres cliffs
  • Best hidden gem: Persephone Café & Bakery

Best Things to Do in Coos Bay, Oregon (At Your Own Pace)

Coos Bay is not a “go-go-go” destination.

It’s a pause.
A reset.

Start your morning slowly. Maybe with coffee. Maybe with a quiet walk. Maybe with both.

If the rain rolls in (and it probably will), lean into it instead of fighting it.

👉 For more cozy ideas, I put together a full rainy day guide here:
https://bitesizedadventures.com/rainy-day-adventures-in-coos-bay

Spend time wandering local shops, stepping into places that feel interesting, not just popular.

You don’t need a plan here.
You just need a little curiosity.

Rainy days aren’t interruptions, they’re invitations.

Best Restaurants in Charleston & Coos Bay

Let’s talk about the real reason you’re here.

The food.

Start in Charleston with one of the most memorable meals of the trip.

👉 If you want the full list of where I ate, you can read it here:
https://bitesizedadventures.com/coastal-oregon-food-guide

Monkey Business
The clam chowder is rich, buttery, and just a little over-the-top. Served in a sourdough bread bowl with extra bread for dipping (which feels like a small victory).

It’s not fancy.
But honestly? That’s part of the charm.

Foggy’s Café
If you catch them open (their hours are… selective), order the vanilla latte and something light. It’s the kind of place that feels local in the best way.

Pro Tip:
Go early or double-check hours—coastal cafés like to keep you guessing.

Comfort food, but make it coastal.

Outdoor Activities Near Coos Bay (When the Weather Cooperates)

When the clouds break even just a little, head toward the coast.

Sunset Bay State Park.
Shore Acres State Park.
Cape Arago State Park.

Each one offers something slightly different, but they all give you that wide, open feeling that makes you stop mid-step.

👉 I mapped out all three spots here if you want to plan your route:
https://bitesizedadventures.com/beaches-near-coos-bay-oregon

You don’t need to hike far.
You don’t need to “do” anything.

Just stand there for a minute.

Let the ocean do its thing.

Rainy Day Adventures in Coos Bay
No itinerary required.

Where to Eat (Again… Because Yes, You Will Be Hungry)

You might think you’re done eating.

You’re not.

Stop at 350 Degrees Bakery in North Bend and order something you’d normally talk yourself out of.

For me? A churro cake cookie with buttercream.

Then, the next day, I stopped for a snickerdoodle cookie (shh, don’t tell anyone).

Too much? Probably.
Did I eat it anyway? Also yes.

Because sometimes… balance is overrated.

Sharing is optional. No judgment here.

FAQ: Visiting Coos Bay, Oregon

Is Coos Bay worth visiting?
Yes, especially if you enjoy quiet travel, cozy cafés, coastal views without crowds, and hiking.

How many days do you need?
2–3 days is perfect for a slow, relaxed trip.

What if it rains the whole time?
Even better. The town feels cozier, the cafés become the destination, and then it’s time to explore the museums.

Is it good for solo travel?
Absolutely. This is a place where solitude feels like a superpower.

Final Thoughts

Coos Bay doesn’t try to be anything it’s not.

And maybe that’s why it works.

You’re not here to rush.
You’re not here to check boxes.

You’re here to sit a little longer.
Eat a little slower.
And trust your own pace.

Stay curious, stay hungry, and keep exploring!
