That’s exactly what happened on my recent quick trip to Brookings. I rolled into town on Saturday, packed in as much food, coffee, ice cream, shopping, and coastal exploring as possible, enjoyed a hearty breakfast Sunday morning, squeezed in a little more hiking, and then headed home.
And honestly?
Brookings proves you don’t need days to fall for a place.
In just one weekend, I discovered local seafood worth waiting for, one seriously memorable ice cream sundae, a coffee drink I’m still thinking about, and pancakes big enough to fuel an entire day on the trails.

First Stop: Hike Hard, Then Eat Well
After a morning spent exploring the trails and building up a serious appetite, lunch was next on the agenda.
If you find yourself in the large parking area near the port, you’ll notice it’s divided into sections packed with food stops, gift shops, and local businesses. One standout is The Hungry Clam, a local hotspot people clearly love.
And when I say busy, I mean busy.
This is one of those places where no matter what time you arrive, there’s probably going to be a wait. Locals order takeout in droves, and there’s a steady stream of hungry visitors who know exactly what they’re there for.
This isn’t a polished, white-tablecloth kind of place. There’s no printed menu, no hostess stand, and no unnecessary frills. You walk up, check out the menu board, place your order, and settle in.
For vegetarians, the options are admittedly limited—mostly grilled cheese or jalapeño poppers—but seafood lovers are in luck.
I ordered the Albacore Tuna Melt, and wow.
Rich, savory, and packed with flavor.
Oregon’s coastal waters support one of the West Coast’s most important albacore tuna fisheries, making albacore a staple on many local menus. Fresh Oregon albacore has a cleaner, richer flavor than the canned version most people know, and this sandwich was proof.

Slugs ‘N Stones ‘N Ice Cream Cones: Ice Cream Happiness
After lunch, dessert was obviously required.
That led me just a few steps away to Slugs ‘N Stones.
Walking in feels like stepping into a classic small-town ice cream shop. There’s an enclosed seating area, then you move into the ordering space, where they keep the door closed to hold onto that glorious air conditioning.
And the flavor selection?
Easily 20+ options.
I went for the Foggy Botton Sundae, which starts with caramel and whipped topping on the bottom before being layered with ice cream and your choice of toppings.
My picks:
- Mini chocolate chips
- Crushed peanuts
- No cherry (we all have our boundaries)
For the ice cream itself, I chose the Caramel Cold Brew, a summer special.
It was creamy and smooth with just a subtle coffee note. If you’re expecting a bold espresso punch, this isn’t that. It leans more dessert-forward, with caramel taking center stage.
Basically, if coffee ice cream and caramel went on a laid-back beach vacation together, this would be the result.

No coastal getaway is complete without wandering through a few gift shops.

It’s cheerful, casual, and exactly the kind of place where you walk in “just to browse” and somehow leave carrying something you definitely didn’t plan to buy.

If you’re staying longer in Brookings, locals often point visitors toward The Fat Irish Kitchen & Pub.
Known for hearty Irish-inspired pub fare, local seafood dishes, and a cozy atmosphere, it’s become one of the town’s go-to dinner spots.
Think elevated comfort food, craft beer, and the kind of meal that feels especially satisfying after spending all day battling Oregon coastal wind.
Breakfast at Mattie’s: Fuel for Adventure
Sunday morning called for pancakes.
I headed to Mattie’s Pancake House around 7:30 a.m., and the place was already buzzing.
That tells you everything you need to know.
Mattie’s is clearly a local institution, and if you’re planning a hiking day, get there early.
I ordered the oatmeal pancakes, and when they arrived, they covered an entire dinner plate.
I was not prepared.
These weren’t your average fluffy pancakes.
The oatmeal gave them a hearty texture and nutty richness that made them deeply satisfying without feeling overly heavy. Plus, those slow-digesting carbs are exactly what your body wants before a long day of hiking—steady energy instead of a quick sugar crash.
I added eggs on the side for protein and paired everything with coffee.

The Coffee Pick-Me-Up I Needed
After a full day of hiking Saturday and squeezing in more trails Sunday morning, I needed caffeine for the drive home.
Enter Cosmic Grind Espresso, conveniently located in the same large parking area as Hungry Clam.
This drive-through-only coffee stand is perfect for grab-and-go energy. There’s no sit-down setup, but since it’s near the port, you can always park nearby and enjoy your drink with dock views.
I ordered a Golden Latte with an added espresso shot on ice
It blended:
- Turmeric
- Cinnamon
- Honey
- Coconut milk
- Espresso
And it was surprisingly fantastic.
The cinnamon naturally boosted the sweetness, so it didn’t need much honey. It had that warm, earthy comfort of golden milk with enough espresso to shake off post-hike exhaustion.
Basically, if a wellness retreat and a coffee shop had a baby.
Why Brookings Works
Brookings doesn’t try too hard.
That’s part of its charm.
It’s a town of simple pleasures done really well:
Fresh seafood.

And enough quirky local shopping to make your wallet nervous.
