The small towns are cozy and feel like a warm hug. If you crave mountains, beaches, or something in between, I know the perfect places for to explore. So buckle up, grab your camera (and your pumpkin spice latte, of course), and let’s dig in!

Why Fall on the East Coast is Pure Magic

Let’s start with the basics—fall in the Eastern U.S. is pure magic. The leaves don’t just change color here; they put on a full-blown light show. The cool air calls for a cozy sweater. The warm autumn light gives everything a golden glow. Plus, the food? Let’s just say it’s apple cider and donut season, and you’re going to want in on that!

Here are four great places to enjoy the autumn: Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maine, and Vermont. Each state is a bit different. But, they all share one thing. They’ll make you feel like you’ve stepped into a fall-themed postcard.

1. Pennsylvania: The Pocono Mountains

If you’re looking for a classic autumn destination, look no further than the Pocono Mountains. This gem in northeastern Pennsylvania has it all. Must-see spots? You can’t miss Bushkill Falls—often called the “Niagara of Pennsylvania.” Imagine hiking through the woods. You hear water cascading over rocks. It’s beautiful in the Autumnal time but equally fantastic on a hot summer day with all the cool misty water spraying you.

Then there’s Jim Thorpe, the little town that time forgot. Its Victorian architecture and quirky charm make it perfect for a hot cocoa after a day of leaf-peeping. Oh, and don’t forget to ride the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway. The colorful foliage views from the train are unbeatable. And the quirky shops are fun to explore.

2. Delaware: Brandywine Valley

Delaware might be small, but its Brandywine Valley packs a big punch when it comes to autumn beauty. This area, on the PA-Delaware border, is known for its rolling hills, historic estates, and stunning foliage.

This huge estate is surrounded by meadows and woods, kissed by autumn equinox season. They beg for a photo shoot.

Longwood Gardens is another can’t-miss spot, just over the border in Pennsylvania. Their Autumn Colors display is a sweater weather dream. It has vibrant mums, towering trees in full glory, and lots of pumpkins. And stop back during the holiday time for the festive decorations!

While you’re there, visit the Billings Farm & Museum. It has harvest fun—wagon rides, pumpkin patches, and apple picking. If you want to hike, check out Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park. The trails take you through forests, over hills, and past scenic farms that look like a storybook.

Of course, no trip to Vermont would be complete without driving along Route 100. This scenic road is known for having some of the best autumn foliage views in the entire country. Roll the windows down, turn up the tunes, and soak it all in. And enjoy some antique shopping along the way

Just a few miles from Lewes, Cape Henlopen has more than pristine beaches and scenic trails. It was a key military site in World War II. Fort Miles Historic Area is in Cape Henlopen State Park. It was a coastal defense fort.

Fort Miles Museum: Exploring Wartime Defense

During World War II, Fort Miles was part of the U.S. Army’s coastal defense network. It protected the Delaware Bay and the Philadelphia Shipyard from enemy attacks. Today, you can explore the Fort Miles Museum, housed in a restored bunker. Visitors can see vintage artillery and bunkers. They can also climb a restored WWII tower for panoramic coastal views.

Kids and adults will enjoy seeing a real artillery gun from a captured German U-boat. They’ll also learn about Cape Henlopen’s role in keeping the coast safe during the war. You’ll leave with a new appreciation for this slice of Delaware’s history. Who knew the beaches weren’t always just for relaxing?
