Beware, parking in Rehoboth is mostly metered, especially near the beach. Trust me, you don’t want a parking ticket to ruin your day! If you’re lucky enough to snag a free spot a bit off the main road, take it. It’s worth the extra walk to avoid the hassle.

Lewes, on the other hand, is the laid-back cousin of Rehoboth. It’s perfect for those who prefer a slower pace, with more refined dining options and a calm, quaint atmosphere. Grab a coffee, stroll the cute streets, and just soak it all in.

A trip to Rehoboth Beach isn’t complete without a stroll down the boardwalk. It’s the perfect place for people-watching, grabbing a quick bite, and soaking in the ocean views. I always make two stops: Candy Kitchen (because my sweet tooth demands it) and Thrasher’s Fries—vinegar-soaked fries that scream beach tradition.

If you’re traveling with family, Grotto’s Pizza is probably already on the list. It’s a local staple, known for its rooftop deck, but I’ve discovered a tastier option—Nicola’s Pizza. Originally just across the boulevard, Nicola’s has now moved to Lewes, DE. The flavor is richer, and it’s become my go-to spot. I will miss the old location but trust me, it’s worth the extra drive!

I can’t resist a good rock shop, and Stoneworks Lapidary in Rehoboth is my favorite. Whether you’re a collector or just browsing, it’s a fun stop for unique souvenirs.

Lewes, Delaware: A Relaxing Getaway

When I’m looking for a slower pace, I head to Lewes, a charming little town filled with quaint shops and cozy cafes. My absolute favorite spot is the Lewes Bake Shoppe. But a word to the wise: get there early! Their pastries sell out fast, and the coffee is so good, there’s always a line.

1. The Station on Kings

The Station on Kings is another must-visit. Not only does it have a beautifully curated selection of home goods and gifts, but the garden area is perfect for a relaxing breakfast or lunch. Be warned, though—the parking lot fills up quickly, even out of season.

Perfect for travelers on the go or locals heading out for a morning walk, these newer spots make it even easier to grab a quality cup of coffee without settling into a full café. Whether you’re looking for a handcrafted espresso, a fresh smoothie, or a quick breakfast, these additions have become part of Ashland’s relaxed, walkable coffee culture.

The baristas know their regulars by name, and you’ll often see neighbors catching up like it’s a scene straight out of Cheers. This is my hand-out spot for a cup of joe.

What I love most about Rogue Valley is its versatility. On a chilly, misty day, you can cozy up by the outdoor fire pit, and on sunnier afternoons, their patio is perfect for soaking in those last rays of fall sun. It’s the perfect blend of comfort and community.

  1. Case Coffee Roasters: The Hub for Coffee and People-Watching

Next up is Case Coffee Roasters, a local favorite with two locations. The downtown spot is a peaceful nook, while their Siskiyou Boulevard location (right across from SOU) is bustling with students, faculty, and people from all walks of life.

I love people-watching here. Their coffee? Outstanding. Their vibe? Warm, welcoming, and very much a reflection of Ashland itself. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the first few fall leaves hitting the ground at Southern Oregon Univesity as you sip on their smooth espresso. One of their locations is across the street from the university.

  1. Noble Coffee Roasting: A Lively Gathering Spot

For those who thrive in lively environments, Noble Coffee Roasting is your go-to spot. Nestled in the Railroad District, Noble is where you’ll find digital nomads typing away, locals gathering for meetings, and travelers soaking in the vibrant energy.

The mornings here start with a bang, and by 9:30 a.m., it’s buzzing with activity. It might be louder than Rogue or Case, but that just adds to the charm. Plus, the coffee? Worth the noise.

  1. Mix Bakeshop: Coffee and Pastries by the Park

Looking for a peaceful retreat? Mix Bakeshop, located near Lithia Park, offers just that. This spot is a gem if you’re craving a sweet treat to go with your coffee. Their pastries are to die for—trust me, you’ll want to grab a couple for later.

Order up! Grab a coffee and pastry, then settle in for some cozy vibes at Mix Bakeshop.

If you’ve got kids in tow, their sister location, Re-Mix, is also a fantastic stop. Coffee, pastries, and ice cream? Yes, please!

    One of Ashland’s newest coffee stops is Fikka, a cozy little stand tucked behind Fit & Flow on Fifth Street. Don’t let its small size fool you—this spot serves beautifully crafted hot and iced coffee, refreshing smoothies, fresh juices, hearty breakfast bowls, and artisan toast.

    Fikka perfectly captures the Ashland lifestyle. Grab a smooth, flavorful latte, then wander through the neighborhood or head toward downtown for an easy morning stroll. Located just a short walk from Rogue Valley Roasting Company, Fikka offers something a little different for those who want more than just coffee. Whether you’re craving a vibrant smoothie, a nourishing breakfast bowl, or a perfectly balanced cappuccino, it’s an excellent stop for a quick pick-me-up before exploring town.

    1. Paddington Perk: A Downtown Pick-Me-Up

      Located in the heart of downtown near the Varsity Theater, Paddington Perk is an ideal stop before shopping, catching a show, or simply wandering Ashland’s charming streets.

      During my visit, the weather was warm and sunny, so instead of my usual coffee, I ordered a chocolate granita. Coffee and chocolate? Yes, please! The icy drink was rich, refreshing, and just the right combination of sweetness and caffeine for a hot summer afternoon. It was the perfect companion while strolling through downtown and browsing the local shops.

      Whether you choose a handcrafted espresso or one of their frozen specialties, Paddington Perk makes grabbing a quick coffee both convenient and delicious.

        One of Ashland’s newest cafés, Café Luminia, brings a warm Italian-inspired atmosphere to the local coffee scene. The inviting café serves expertly crafted espresso drinks alongside seasonal frittatas, fresh pastries, and other light breakfast offerings.

        I ordered a cappuccino, and it was wonderfully smooth with a rich, velvety foam that paired perfectly with my meal. The seasonal mushroom, zucchini, olive, and Parmesan frittata was savory, fresh, and packed with flavor. Every bite tasted homemade and thoughtfully prepared.

        If you’re looking for a leisurely breakfast or brunch with exceptional coffee, Café Luminia is quickly becoming one of Ashland’s standout cafés.

        1. Hidden Gem: Southern Grounds at SOU

          Now for a hidden ge, you won’t want to miss: Southern Grounds, tucked away in the Hannon Library on Southern Oregon University’s campus. This student-run café is the perfect escape from the rain when you’re looking for a quiet spot to sip on some coffee and get lost in a book (or your laptop).

          Closed for now, but worth the wait! Southern Grounds is the perfect hidden gem to fuel up when school’s in session.

          It’s not the easiest spot to find, but that’s part of the charm. Just remember, it’s closed during summer, weekends and academic breaks, so plan your visit accordingly.

Temperatures in the summer often reach a sizzling 100°F, and the heat lingers well into the evening. Mornings are usually a bit cooler, hovering around 70°F to 80°F, but by the afternoon, you’ll feel that intense heat.

          Pro Tip: If you’re traveling in July or August, plan your outdoor activities for the early morning or after dinner when the sun’s heat is more bearable. The evenings often cool off around 10 p.m., making for perfect sunset strolls.

          Wildfire Risks: What You Need to Know

          One of the more serious concerns of summer travel in Ashland is the risk of wildfires. As someone who’s relatively new to the West Coast, I quickly learned that wildfire season is no joke.           In 2020, the Almeta Fire burned through the Rogue Valley, devastating many local communities and forcing thousands to evacuate. On September 4, 2024, I was once again reminded of the ever-present danger when a brush fire broke out near where I live. Fortunately, local firefighters were quick to respond, and the fire was contained after only affecting 13 acres.

          Pro Tip: Download the Watch Duty app for real-time updates on active fires in the area. It provides you with wind patterns and other important info, which could be crucial if you’re traveling during peak wildfire season.

          Though wildfires are rare, their impact is far-reaching. Stay informed when traveling.

          How to Navigate Ashland’s Heat and Wildfire Season Safely

          So, is Ashland worth visiting despite the heat and wildfire risks? Absolutely. While you do need to be prepared, there are plenty of ways to have a safe and enjoyable summer visit.

          Here are a few quick tips to stay cool and safe:

          • Stay Hydrated: Ashland’s dry heat can be relentless. Always carry a reusable water bottle and refill often. Local cafes often have water stations too.
          • Plan Your Itinerary Wisely: As mentioned, the heat is worst in the afternoon, so make the most of your mornings and evenings for outdoor activities. Spend the hottest part of the day indoors exploring the local museums, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, or enjoying a leisurely lunch at one of Ashland’s amazing vegetarian and pescatarian-friendly spots like The Greenleaf Restaurant.
          • Stay Updated on Fire Risks: As wildfires are a real threat, make sure to stay updated on current conditions. Aside from the Watch Duty app, you can join the Riverstone Commons ~ Ashland, OR Facebook group to stay in the loop with the local community.

          Pro Tip: For a more affordable experience, check out the free Green Show, a pre-show performance in the outdoor Elizabethan Theatre that offers music, dance, and theatre performances.
